(This is a seven poem series that was directly inspired by my younger brother, Sam. I wrote a different poem based on my perception and experiences with him at each stage.)
Early Infancy
As you grew,
your eyes were open more,
your cheeks grew fatter,
your ankles became too large.
Mom had to cut the elastic in your socks.
Empty bottles were everywhere
and full ones never seemed
to come to you quick enough.
We spent our evenings
going around in circles
as I pushed you in your walker.
Mom was always nervous
and wished I would stop,
but your giggling let me know
you were having the time
of your life.
Whenever you cried,
I panicked.
I was still young myself
and struggled to process
the emotions of others.
Mom knew what to do though,
she always knew.
